Giclee the Coastal Way
Actually, giclee printing doesn't have anything to do with the coast, except
that we're located there. Basically, giclee is inkjet printing (it's a
French word for spraying). What differentiates it from what you might
do with a desktop printer on your home computer is the resolution and the
inks that are available for high quality reproduction.
The Fine Art Work Flow
Start with a good digital scan of the original image. It might be from a
digital camera, from a film or reflective scanner, or some other process
of digitizing an original.
We open that digital image in a color managed work space (Photoshop for
instance) and run it through a series of steps to assure correct color
balance, resolution, sizing, image quality and sharpness. Then we apply
an ICC color profile for the specific paper and printer.

Art Papers
Since contemporary papers are often coated to interact with the inks, the
paper makes a huge differnence in the final quality and appearance of
the print. Pigment based inksets, such as Epson's Ultrachrome K3 line, combined
with compatible papers are rated for longevity of 70 to 100 years. Dye based
inksets don't share the same longevity (although they are getting much
better), but they provide great results on uncoated stock.
Hawk River Images stocks several high quality archival papers
including:
- Breathing Color Brilliance Chromata Canvas
- Breathing Color Allure Photo Rag
- Illuminata Bright White water color paper
- Moab Entrada Bright White
- Breathing Color Elegance Velvet White
We can also print on special papers that we don't stock if you have a
specific requirement.
Services and Prices
Hawk River provides preparataion and finishing services along with printing
including
- digitizing originals
- image processing, resotoration and preparation

- custom matting and framing
Digitizing is just the process of making a digital reproduction of an original
art work. There are a variety of methods of doing this and the choice varies
according to the intent of the copy and characteristics of the original.
Hawk River can digitize most flat art work for reproduction up to a full
sheet size of 34 x 44 in. and some larger jobs on a one off basis.
Typically, for high quality reproduction, the work flow consists of capturing
the digital image and then color balancing the image to the original for the
closest match possible and making a proof print for comparison purposes. In a
normal digitizing process, we provide a CD with the raw scan, a color
balanced TIF format copy of the image, a screen resolution JPEG and a smaller
thumbnail image for computer preview, along with the proof print. The proof
print is priced at the 2 - 9 rate for the size of print as indicated in
the next table.
| Digitizing (includes setup and normal processing) |
| Digital Capture (Canon 20D RAW Capture) |
$35 per image |
| Film/Transparency Scanning (to 8 x 10) |
$23 per image |
| Reflective Scanning (up to 8 1/2 x 14) |

Print pricing
This table shows the centerline pricing on fine art papers and canvas. Certain
specialty papers or special order extra heavy papers will have a surcharge
reflective of their additional cost just as lighter weight or less expensive
papers will be subject to a discount. As with other aspects of this business,
if you have special requirements, talk to me. We'll work it out.
These prices represent the typical art papers that Hawk River normally
stocks, such as Hanamuhle Photo Rag (210gsm) or Breathing Color Chrmoata canvas.
Our general paper range includes smooth fine art paper, velvet texture
bright white, canvas, watercolor paper and photo rag. All papers are
conservation quality, medium to heavy weight (180 to 280gsm) fine art paper.
The sizes below reference the traditional sheet sizes of fine art prints as
opposed to traditional photo sizes. Pricing for off-size images will be
guided by the nearest sheet size that the image dimensions fit within.
